In the article, “Hospital Operative Volume and Quality Indication for General Surgery Operations Performed Emergently in Geriatric Patients,” by Becher and colleagues, which appeared in the June 2019 issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Volume 228, Number 6, pages 910e23, the title was incorrect. The correct title is, “Hospital Operative Volume as a Quality Indicator for General Surgery Operations Performed Emergently in Geriatric Patients.” The editors apologize for this error.

Additionally, in Appendix E, several tabulated cells were published incorrectly. The corrected Appendix E is presented below. The authors apologize for this error.

Appendix

Appendix E, Table E1.

Patient Characteristics (Appendectomy)

Variable Survived Died p Value*
Patients, n 4829 28

 Black 108 (2.4) ≤10
 Non-black, non-white 733 (16.0) ≤10
 Hispanic 751 (16.4) ≤10
Age, y, mean (SD) 74.0 (7.0) 80.0 (7.7) <0.001

Because of missing individual data for race and ethnicity and payor source the total number of patients for those variables are lower than the patient totals for the survived and died columns.

*

p Values from 2-sided t-test for continuous variables and chi-square for categorical variables

As per provisions of the Data Use Agreement (DUA) for the California State Inpatient Database (SID), a restricted-access, publicly available dataset that is maintained by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), we cannot report, release, or disclose information where the number of observations of tabulated data is ≤10. Therefore, this cell is labeled “≤10”.
