Bacterial growth in HIOs. HIOs were microinjected with 103 CFU of nonpathogenic Nissle, pathogenic EHEC, or pathogenic UPEC. The HIOs were incubated with penicillin-streptomycin in the tissue culture medium to prevent bacterial growth outside of the lumen.
