In the article by Schiavon et al, “Effects of Bariatric Surgery in Obese Patients With Hypertension: The GATEWAY Randomized Trial (Gastric Bypass to Treat Obese Patients With Steady Hypertension),” which published online before print November 13, 2017, and appeared in the March 13, 2018, issue of the journal (Circulation. 2018;137:1132–1142. DOI: 10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.117.032130), corrections are needed.
In reviewing the medical register of patients, the authors identified 6 patients for whom the wrong gender was recorded. This error occurred because the case register form the authors used selects the male gender by default, and the researcher who registered these 6 patients did not correctly change it to female. The reason this was not identified earlier is because the data manager and statisticians did not have access to registration data (such as names) of the patients.
This error has no impact on the authors’ primary end point. However, some of the secondary end points, which were dependent on gender, need correction. The only end point that shows a significant change is the incidence of anemia, since the cutoff for anemia is different for men and women.
The resulting corrections have been made to the current online version of the article, which is available at https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.117.032130.
