This delightful little book documents the story of Robert Freeman (author) from 1972 to July 2018. It follows this Harvard graduate, a Princeton PhD, and Steinway artist through an early marriage and then a second marriage of 42 years to Carol. They have been the proud masters of 17 tenured dogs, 11 of them golden retrievers, 6 of them American dogs (i.e., crossbreeds). Reading this book is a special way for anyone to spend a couple of hours in an afternoon, especially if you are in any way involved in the dog world. Hearing the stories of these animals and the experiences of their keepers certainly warms the heart of anyone within the veterinary profession. While some of the pictures are dated and a little out of focus, they complement the writing by providing actual images of the many dogs involved in their lives. I believe this book makes a solid statement for any doubters about how dogs, their habits, and desire to please can warm the hearts of any souls who allow them into their lives. Whether they stay with you or are simply passing through, a dog can leave an impression that lasts forever. Read and enjoy, at this length, it is certainly worth a second reading.
