The ‘double scalpel’ scar excision technique

S Burns 1,, P Subramanian 2
PMCID: PMC7705136  PMID: 32981354

This technique enables rapid scar excision, leaving straight incisions at right angles to the skin for optimal closure and cosmesis. The authors have found this technique particularly useful in revision arthroplasty.

The handles of two mounted scalpels are secured together using a strip of adhesive tape. It is imperative that the blades are taped securely and at the same level to be handled as one instrument (Figures 1-3). The initial skin incision is then made with this ‘double scalpel’, with the scar to be excised between the two blades. The entire length of scar tissue can then be removed.
