The present contribution is the first of a series begun in Southern California under the auspices of a Sigma Xi Fellowship and continued under grants from the Graduate School of the University of Illinois and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The series will consist of brief contributions on special topics which arise in conjunction with the larger projects of the study of phases of Paleopathology. Each study will be complete in itself and will carry its own illustrations.
