I am very excited to be the new psychiatry editor of Archives of Neuropsychiatry. I have taken over the editor position from Dr. Cem Atbaşoğlu, in whose team I had the honour of working as an associate editor for the last five years. I would like to thank him for all his work and effort.
Archives of Neuropsychiatry is the official journal of Turkish Neuropsychiatric Society which is one of the most rooted associations in our country with a history going back to 1914 (1). The first journal of neurology and psychiatry in Turkey, “Şişli Müessesesinde Emrâz-i Akliye ve Asabiye Müsamereleri (The Meetings of Mental and Neurological Diseases at Şişli/La Paix)” published between 1916 and 1918 by a founder member of the association, Mazhar Osman, can be referred as the precursor of Archives of Neuropsychiatry (2). Consequently, the journals “Istanbul Seririyati (Istanbul Clinics)” (1919–1951) and “Acta-Neuropsychiatrica” (1951–1960) were published by Turkish Neuropsychiatric Society. Archives of Neuropsychiatry was started in 1964 during the national meeting of neuropsychiatry entitled as Cooperated Scientific Congress (1).
As humble as its start was in the publishing world with conference proceedings; today Archives of Neuropsychiatry broadcasts a variety of highest quality scientific papers including but not limited to original research papers, reviews, case reports, and brief reports. Furthermore, it is listed in the most prominent national and international scientific indexes (for the full list please see http://noropsikiyatriarsivi.com/ana). Listed in PubMed since 2013, the journal’s impact factor has consistently increased during recent years until it hit 0.856 (3). Its wide scope covers both clinical and basic papers in neurology, psychiatry and related behavioural sciences. Our journal accepts submissions in either Turkish or English, whereas accepted papers are published in both languages, giving the journal the hallmark of dual language publication. It is an open access journal, all published issues are available online for free in both Turkish and English.
As a matter of fact, time is the most influential variable in the world. Adjustments to changes over time is essential to stay in the publishing world for scientific journals. Archives of Neuropsychiatry is taking fast and appropriate actions in reply to the changes time brings since twentieth century, and keeps evolving. Unfortunately, as most of the non-profit scientific journals in the world, to maintain open access publishing and more importantly to survive, we had the challenge of requesting an inevitable publication fee from the authors. Thanks to the latest technological advances in publishing, we had access to faster and more sensitive review processes and we had the chance to reach out to more colleagues, all at the same time.
Recent years have witnessed breath taking developments in every field of technology. In particular, developments in artificial intelligence technologies influenced both research and clinical practices in psychiatry (4). The pandemic which has been capturing the world for more than a year, not only tested the convenience of these latest technologies, but also increased the consumption of them. We all observed the widespread use of virtual teleconferencing technologies which allowed remote medical evaluations. Under these circumstances, Archives of Neuropsychiatry started to receive more papers which successfully integrated artificial intelligence and other computer based technologies in their studies. Recognizing them as the harbingers of the future, we happily published the ones which met our journal’s high quality criteria. We are hoping to receive and publish more of these studies in the future. Psychiatry has always been inside and in the centre of the developments that happen in the world. Our journal welcomes the studies of the future with all its experience from the past.
I personally, see the editor position as an opportunity to work with researchers to increase the quality and impact of their papers. I am looking forward to a great 2021 for the journal with expanded reader base, faster manuscript evaluation process, and many high quality innovative papers driving increased impact factor!
