The Oath of Hippocrates is no longer an adequate lodestar for the Ophthalmologist Eye MD. Even the most honest and ethical physician must face complex, nuanced situations where reference to this short, easy to read book will be useful. In such situations the patient, the physician and society will all benefit. I would like to see this book distributed by Departments of Ophthalmology to all their students, residents, fellows, and faculty. Of course the irony of this subject is that the ophthalmologists that need it the most (unnecessary surgery, fraudulent billing, practicing under the influence of alcohol-drugs, sexual abuse of staff-patients, etc.) will never consider serious perusal of this important new text. There is much conflation with general medical ethics and physicians in other branches of medicine would find this succinct book valuable as well. As with his other best-selling book, Waking Up Blind: Lawsuits Over Eye Surgery (Langdon Street Press, 2009), Dr. Harbin’s focus on ethics will make us better physicians-ophthalmologists and improve the quality of care we render.
