“New ISN effort to raise interest in Neuropathology: Conference in Sofia, Bulgaria”
‘The ISN has recently established a sub‐committee for the training and teaching of Neuropathology throughout the world (chaired by Professor Scaravilli). Its aim is to spread the interest for this discipline, and help with local development of neuropathology, by organising courses and meetings in countries which so require, so that as many people as possible be able to have contact with experts in various fields of Neuropathology and could learn from, and discuss with, them.
The first of these meetings, which will take place in Sofia (Bulgaria) on Saturday 26th September 2009, has been made possible thanks to the combined efforts of Professor Francesco Scaravilli and Professor Herbert Budka, the President‐elect of the ISN, together with Professor Latchezar Traykov (Department of Neurology of the Medical University of Sofia) and Doctor Marin Guentchev (Department of Neurosurgery).
The programme, finalised after discussion between the members of the Sub‐committee and the host Society, will be introduced by a key note lecture by Professor Budka on “Neuropathology, the Missing Link between Basic and Clinical Neurosciences”.
Four lectures will follow on topical themes such as Tumours of the CNS, Neurodegeneration, Inflammatory disorders of the CNS, and Neuromuscular disorders. Each lecture (given by Professors Wesseling, Ince, Scaravilli and Goebel, respectively) will be preceded by an introductory talk by members of the Bulgarian Society (Doctors Guentchev, Mehrabian, Tchorbanov and Mihaylova respectively). The speakers will combine diagnostic with genetic and molecular biological information to enable the participants to have the state of the art situation for each topic presented. Then a Conclusion /Discussion will follow, chaired by Professor Budka and Doctor Draganski.
With the present announcement we would like to let know the Societies of Neuropathology, as well as all Neuropathologists of the countries neighbouring Bulgaria, that the meeting is open also to members of other countries and that everybody is welcome. In this respect we suggest interested people should contact Doctor Marin Guentchev (maringuentchev@yahoo.com).
This meeting intends to be the first of a series and the ISN is particularly keen for this venture to succeed in order to raise the interest for Neuropathology on a global scale.
It is the wish of the ISN that Societies throughout the world that may be interested in organising a similar meeting in the future should contact the Chairman of the Sub‐committee (f.scaravilli@ion.ucl.ac.uk) for information and details.’
The XVIIth International Congress of Neuropathology will be held in Salzburg, Austria, September 11–15, 2010. For more information, please visit the Congress web site at http://www.ICN2010.org.
ISN travel grant. The ISN will annually award up to 3 grants, each of up to 1500 Swiss Francs, to support visits of neuropathology trainees in developing countries to neuropathology centres of excellence. The primary aim of such visits should be to provide training for the grant recipient and to promote future educational interactions between the host department and that of the trainee.
The application, with a brief explanation of the reasons for the visit and intended benefits, should be made by the trainee's head of department if applicable, or another senior member of staff in his/her institution, and should be accompanied by the applicant's CV. In addition a letter of support should be sent by the head of the neuropathology department in the host institution. The application, CV and letter of support should be emailed to the SecretaryGeneral of the ISN. Applications may be made at any time but awards will be made only in March/April and October/ November each year. The funds will be made available through the host institution.
Reminder concerning updates of the online Membership Directory of the ISN and of the Society News: Members of the ISN and members of National Societies who changed their address or parts of the address are asked to send their complete address by e‐mail to the Secretary General of the ISN, Seth Love. Changes of the officers of National Societies and special events in these Societies should be announced by e‐mail to the Project Secretary, Leila Chimelli. (The corresponding e‐mail addresses are indicated next to the “Dear Reader” column in this issue of Brain Pathology).
