The XVIIth International Congress of Neuropathology will be held in Salzburg, Austria, September 11–15, 2010. For more information, please visit the Congress web site at http://www.ICN2010.org.

IXth European Congress of Neuropathology, Athens, Greece, 8–10 May 2008. The congress is organized by Euro‐CNS in conjunction with the Hellenic Society of Neuropathology. The program will have three parts: “Tumours of the CNS”, “Epilepsy and Neuropathology” and “Free Topics”. Abstracts will be called for in all neuropathology categories. The program will include 9 plenary lectures, 13 mini symposia/workshops and provide excellent opportunity for researchers to present an abstract (poster/oral). Website: http://www.ecnp2008.org

Neuropathology Training (“CME”) Course “White Matter Diseases”, Turin, Italy, 28–30 November 2007. The 10th Euro‐CNS CME neuropathology course, “White Matter Diseases”, will be held from 28–30 November 2007 in Turin, Italy. The course will be in English, and consists of lectures with an emphasis on teaching. Practical (microscope‐based) sessions are part of the course. This course and workshop will provide practising neuro‐pathologists, clinicians and researchers with up‐to‐date reviews of the classification and the diagnostic problems in the pathology of White Matter Diseases. The course consists of alternate lectures and slide sessions. Web: http://www.euro‐cns.org

The European Confederation of Neuropathological Societies (Euro‐CNS) has already successfully established and executed a series of courses in Neuropathology addressed to neuropathologists with some or considerable professional experience and other neuroscientists alike. A Summer School of Neuropathology aims at providing a comprehensive and more basic survey of neuropathology, largely tailored to trainees in neuropathology and related fields. A third level attempts at presenting a cross section of neuropathology to an audience not yet active in neuropathology but interested in it and, perhaps, subsequently entering it. Such an Introductory Course in Neuropathology has recently been held in Bucharest/Romania for three days (May 21–23, 2007), attracting some 50 participants, both from Romania and Bulgaria, engaged in pathology, clinical neurology, and partial or comprehensive neuropathology at resident and staff member levels. As indicated in the programme, one pair of speakers was local, Drs. Marilena Alexianu and Arcadiu Petrescu, and another pair from abroad, Profs. Jacqueline Mikol (Paris/France) and Hans Goebel Mainz/Germany, all related to Euro‐CNS as former national delegates and officers. The lecture hall was packed beyond capacity with ample time during intermission for personal conversation among participants as well as the audience and speakers. Two brain cutting sessions, one on sectioning techniques of the normal brain, the other one on gross neuropathology turned out to be quite popular among participants. At least the early impression suggests that such national or regional Introductory Courses in Neuropathology may likewise be of interest and succeed in other regions of Europe as well.

ISN travel grant. The ISN will annually award up to 3 grants, each of up to 1500 Swiss Francs, to support visits of neuropathology trainees in developing countries to neuropathology centres of excellence. The primary aim of such visits should be to provide training for the grant recipient and to promote future educational interactions between the host department and that of the trainee.

The application, with a brief explanation of the reasons for the visit and intended benefits, should be made by the trainee's head of department if applicable, or another senior member of staff in his/her institution, and should be accompanied by the applicant's CV. In addition a letter of support should be sent by the head of the neuropathology department in the host institution. The application, CV and letter of support should be emailed to the Secretary General of the ISN. Applications may be made at any time but awards will be made only in March/April and October/ November each year. The funds will be made available through the host institution.

Reminder concerning updates of the online Membership Directory of the ISN and of the Society News: Members of the ISN and members of National Societies who changed their address or parts of the address are asked to send their complete address by e‐mail to the Secretary General of the ISN, Seth Love. Changes of the officers of National Societies and special events in these Societies should be announced by e‐mail to the Project Secretary, Leila Chimelli. (The corresponding e‐mail addresses are indicated next to the “Dear Reader” column in this issue of Brain Pathology).

Australia and New Zealand. At the 2005 Annual General Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Neuropathology, Associate Professor Jillian Kril was elected president. (Department of Pathology, D06, University of Sydney, NSW, 2006, Australia. E:mail: Jilliank@med.usyd.edu.au). Baltic Association of Neuropathologists (BAN). A multinational neuropathological association with colleagues from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania has been founded. The current president is Dr. Daina Apskalne. The“2nd International Summer Workshop” was held in Riga/Latvia − June 14 & 15, 2007. The meeting was attended by some 40 participants and held in the lecture hall of the Hospital “Gailezers”, the modern centre for neurosciences in Riga and Latvia. The small scale of such a scientific meeting actually allowed complete digital distribution of all the presenters’ material to each participant. The programme consisted of three lectures: “Current Significance and Value of Electron Microscopy in Neuropathology” by Hans H. Goebel, Mainz/Germany; “Diagnostic Issues in Adult CNS Tumors” by Harry V. Vinters, Los Angeles/USA and “Morphology of Childhood Brain Tumors − Avoiding Diagnostic Pitfalls” by Hannes Vogel, Stanford/USA who all very much enjoyed their roots in and ties to Latvia and the Baltic States. An outstanding presentation on “MRI of Post‐Therapeutic Glial Tumors” by Gaida Krumina, the neuroradiologist of Riga Stradins University, presentation of the project “CNS Histiocytic Tumours and Tumour‐like Masses in Childhood” by Inga Gudinaviciene of the Kaunas Medical University Hospital and case presentations of rare neuropathologies in Latvia by Daina Apskalne of Riga Stradins University were followed by a regular business meeting of the BAN. This “2nd International Summer Workshop” was superbly organised by Daina Apskalne and combined social amenities in and of Riga, indicating that the BAN is a young, still small but nevertheless thriving neuropathological society as a promising member of Euro‐CNS, hopefully further attracting international participants at future BAN meetings in Baltic States. The next meeting will be organised on 2009 in Lithuania.
