From the President's pen

I am extremely pleased that the symposium on CKDu was organized on May 13, 2017 at Madras Medical Mission Hospital, Chennai under the auspices of the Indian Society of Nephrology. Other stake-holders like the World Health Organization, the Indian Council of Medical Research, TANKER Foundation and various environmentalists and genetecists were well represented. It was a privilege to participate in this meeting which brought together clinicians practicing nephrology, allied specialists and public health professionals.

The meeting aimed at looking at CKDu across India and Sir Lanka from various vantage points, from the known to the unknown,––reviewing existing knowledge and planning on potential research priorities and strategizing for the future. The presentations centered around defining CKDu for our community, its distribution, pathology, possible pathogenesis, management and optimising renal replacement therapy as well as ongoing genetic research in Srikakulam and Sri Lanka. Dr Chula Herath from Sri Lanka and Dr. T Ravi Raju and Dr. Gangadhar Taduri need special mention for their work and for highlighting the problems faced by the nephrology fraternity across the globe.

I thank Dr. Georgi Abraham for bringing the group together for a fruitful day of discussions and deliberations.
