Following concerns expressed by a reader, the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Journal of Experimental Botany, along with the corresponding author, have taken the decision to retract the above paper. The article is retracted due to concerns over image manipulation, which raise sufficient doubts regarding the credibility of the study. The Journal investigated this matter and has reached this decision in compliance with ethical guidelines endorsed by the Committee for Publication Ethics.
