Abstract

The antioxydants butylhydroxyanisol (BHA), butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) and ethoxyquin (EMQ) were tested for mutagenicity in the so-called “Ames test”. The test was performed with and without the addition of microsomal mixed function oxidase system from rat liver. The compounds were found not to be mutagenic in this test. At high concentration of BHA and EMQ toxic effects on the growth of the bacteria were observed.
