It is an annual tradition at the Korean Congress of Radiology (KCR) to recognize the most impactful original research article and, occasionally, the most impactful review article published in the Korean Journal of Radiology (KJR) by awarding the authors during the meeting. The editors of KJR select from the articles published in the journal in the last five years, including the award year (to be revised to three years starting 2022). The award is given to the first authors of the articles chosen.
The recipients of the 2021 Most Impactful KJR Article Award are the following:
Dong Wook Kim (Asan Medical Center, Korea) and Hye Young Jang (National Cancer Center, Korea) for “Design Characteristics of Studies Reporting the Performance of Artificial Intelligence Algorithms for Diagnostic Analysis of Medical Images: Results from Recently Published Papers” [1] under the category of original research, while Hyun Woo Goo (Asan Medical Center, Korea) for “Dual-Energy CT: New Horizon in Medical Imaging” [2] under the category of review.
Although the true impact of an article is difficult to define, the most dominant factor that we consider in selecting the awardees is the number of citations according to the Web of Science. Several articles on coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) published in the journal in 2020 have already been cited similarly or even more frequently in their shorter time span since the publication [3,4,5,6,7] because COVID-19 is currently the most significant health concern worldwide. Despite the high number of citations, we may likely evaluate the value and quality of a COVID-19 paper from a research viewpoint more appropriately in the coming years. Citation is an important feature to gauge the impact of an article; however, it is not the only relevant factor and has pitfalls. Therefore, there are currently additional new approaches to estimate the impact of an article, such as the frequency of access to an article and the Altmetric score. KJR tracks the number of access to an article published in the journal using Google Analytics, while it did not adopt the Altmetric score. Each month, we post the top 10 articles most accessed in the previous month as “Trending Now on KJR” articles on the front page of the journal website (https://www.kjronline.org) to recognize authors who contributed their influential articles to KJR and to bring the readers' attention to the articles (Fig. 1).

The list (red rectangle) is updated regularly near the middle of each month.
Another tradition at KCR is the Editor's Recognition Award for Distinguished Reviewers to recognize KJR reviewers who showed outstanding review activities. Recently, excluding 2020, when there was a significant surge in COVID-19 manuscripts [8], approximately 500 individuals have served as reviewers for KJR each year [9,10]. The Editor's Recognition Award is for a small group (less than 10%) of reviewers chosen for the high quality and quantity of their prompt, scholarly reviews. In addition to these specific reviewers, the KJR editors acknowledge all our reviewers and sincerely appreciate their contributions. The 28 recipients of the 2021 Editor's Recognition Award for Distinguished Reviewers are as follows:
| Sung Soo Ahn | Jae Seok Bae | Hee-Dong Chae | |
| Won Chang | Soo Buem Cho | Sang Hyun Choi | |
| Eun Ju Chun | Dae Hee Han | Eui Jin Hwang | |
| Jinhee Jang | Woo Kyoung Jeong | Gong Yong Jin | |
| Cheolkyu Jung | Hyungjin Kim | Ji-hoon Kim | |
| Sungjun Kim | Yeun-Yoon Kim | Eun Sun Lee | |
| Young Han Lee | Kyoungjune Pak | Hee Sun Park | |
| Ji Eun Park | Sung Yoon Park | Hyungjin Rhee | |
| Kyoung Doo Song | Sung Eun Song | Hee Mang Yoon | |
| Young Cheol Yoon |
We will continue to look for ways to recognize and encourage the contributions of the authors and reviewers of the journal.
