Large genomic datasets exist for cattle, broilers and pigs that underlie selection strategies and define mating schemes for genetic improvement (Misztal et al., 2020). Estimating genetic contributions associated with longevity may assist both swine and cattle producers by identifying animals with stayability in the herd (Brzáková et al., 2018; Poulsen et al., 2020). Correct structural conformation facilitates longevity and candidate osteogenic genes have been identified that associate with feet and leg scores in Nellore cattle (Vargas et al., 2018). In a recent paper, phenotypic scores for front hoof angle and front hoof depth positively correlate with stayability in the beef cow herd (Giess et al., 2021). These traits and others provide new producer-friendly measures for consideration in breeding programs.
