Abstract

This Commentary describes a call for submissions for the upcoming Special Issue focused on the science presented at the 9th Congress of The Russian Photobiological Society entitled “Actual Problems in Photobiology.”

PHOTOBIOLOGY is broadly defined to include all biological phenomena involving non-ionizing radiation. It is recognized that photobiological responses are the result of chemical and/or physical changes induced in biological systems by non-ionizing radiation (Constitution of the American Society for Photobiology). This definition implies that photobiology involves diverse scientific disciplines demonstrating its multidisciplinary nature. In many countries, photobiologists united forming their professional societies, as they did in Russia under auspices of Russian Photobiological Society.

This Commentary announces a call for submissions for the upcoming Special Issue focused on the science presented at the 9th Congress of The Russian Photobiological Society held in Shepsi, Krasnodar region, Russia, on September 12–19, 2021, titled “Actual Problems in Photobiology.”

The Congress ran in 8 Sections with 144 attendees, 18 of which delivered their talks online. Including coauthors, 314 participants joined the meeting.

This Special Issue aims to both highlight The Russian Photobiological Society and explore the science presented in this meeting. To do so, the Special Issue will feature topics presented at the meeting selected from the range of invited speakers and poster presenters. As such, review articles from Congress speakers and poster presenters to the Congress (and any associated conferences) are solicited. Summarizing Commentaries from session chairs are also requested. To better explore the Society, a number of invited Commentaries will also be sought from prominent members of The Russian Photobiological Society. International scientists sharing a common research interest in photobiology and photobiophysics are encouraged to contact the Guest Editors to discuss the possibility of making a submission.

The Special Issue for the 9th Congress of the Russian Photobiological Society will be prepared and co-edited by the authors of the present commentary (Anatoly Tsygankov, Andrew Rubin, Valery Tuchin, Galina Riznichenko, and Alexei Solovchenko). The submission deadline for review articles is April 10, 2022, with online publication scheduled for Issue 4 of that same year. The session chairpersons of the Congress will contribute short commentary papers summarizing the topics and content of the presentations made in their corresponding sessions.

Briefly, Biophysical Reviews publishes two types of reviews: short (3000–4000 words, 3 figures) or long reviews (10,000 words, 10 figures). A series of Commentaries (200–400 words, 1 figure, around 10 references) will be contributed by the Session Chairs, selected Members of the Society, and the Organizing Committee. Importantly, the authors are requested to choose the correct Special Issue during submission of their manuscripts. Further information on preparing the submission is available via the web links below or from the Editors of the Special Issue.

Publication cost

Biophysical Reviews is a hybrid open-access journal and therefore operates on a two-track payment. The first track is completely free but requires that the article exists behind a paywall for 6 to 12 months while the second track involves an open access charge of ~ 2000 Euros. Both tracks give a highly desirable publishing outcome for the author. Please contact the Special Issue Editors for further description of this point.

Acknowledgements

The Congress was supported in part by LLC “Helicon” (www.helicon.ru) and LLC “Labinstruments” (www.labinstruments.ru). The hospitality which the resort “Mayak” at Shepsi offered to the participants of the Congress is greatly appreciated.
