Journal innovations, 2021 closure, and reviewers’ gratitude

Yoram Reich 1,
PMCID: PMC8781694  PMID: 35095208

Once again, a year closure with the COVID-19. If we believe that design is ubiquitous and that the design can offer solutions (Reich 2020) then as professionals, we should have adjusted and perhaps even exploited opportunities afforded by COVID-19 as it forced us to question past practices. Rethinking old practices, we are planning to introduce two innovations into our journal. The first innovation is the incorporation of a Research Environmental Impact Disclosure (REID) by authors of papers (Reich and Finkbeiner 2022). This will make us more environmentally conscious about our research practices and about the challenges we study and the solutions we propose. We strive for a more sustainable world and we hope this would be our modest contribution. With this initiative, Research in Engineering Design will be the first academic journal to introduce such a REID statement.

The second innovation deals with improving the quality of submissions, easing their review, and making them more comprehensible and accessible to a wider audience. The quest to achieve these goals is challenging and consequently requires extended participation of the research community to practice proposals (Reich and Subrahmanian 2022), design alternatives, and evolve this practice.

Over the last year, the number of submissions to Research in Engineering Design increased by several percent. We published 25 papers, slightly more than the year before. This was made possible only through the extended community supporting the journal: the authors that submit the results of their research to the journal, the area editors and the editorial board members that volunteer to manage and contribute to the review process, and the many dedicated reviewers.

I wish all of us and our families and colleagues good health and a safe transition through this time and would like, especially, to extend my deep gratitude to the numerous reviewers who contributed their efforts to maintain and improve the quality of the journal. The reviewers, outside the editorial board, who completed a review this year, are in alphabetic order:
