Erratum

In the original publication of the article, the authors mistakenly included some faulty information: In Table 3 the estimates for mortality and disability effects were incorrect. The correct estimates are provided in the table below, together with a revised version of the corresponding results section on page 1072 of the article. These details have been corrected only in this corrigendum to preserve the published version of record.

Decomposition of observed trends

The increase in life expectancy without health problems was predominantly driven by changes in mortality. Between 1992 and 2011, the increase of years without severe disability, and without mild disability, was mainly driven by mortality effects for men. For women disability effect was greater for sever disability while mortality effect had a larger impact on mild disability. For life expectancy without mobility problems, the mortality effect had a greater impact in both sexes.

Between 2004 and 2011, the increase of years without severe disability was mostly driven by disability effects for women, for men it was mortality that had a greater impact. Years without mild disability were mainly driven by mortality effects for men, and disability effect for women. For years without mobility problems, the mobility effect had a greater impact for women.
