The wonder and magic of the natural world

Dear Editor,

I read Dr. Kwantes’ President’s Message in the January 2022 issue (Can Vet J 2022;63:11–12), with fond gratitude. I am a small animal private practitioner for 3 decades and this pandemic has been incredibly challenging for us. It feels like we are out on the extremes of a tree limb, quivering away. I have found myself reaching for the spiritual and philosophical. I first read Annie Dillard when I was 16 years old, and that particular book Pilgrim at Tinker Creek has been a touchstone for me my entire adult life. The stark realism juxtaposed with the wonder and magical natural world is something I need to keep going in this crazy time. I very rarely find my own experience or journey reflected in this Journal but thank you to Dr. Kwantes for getting personally and philosophically courageous in these trying times.
