The purpose of this film is to provide an educational training video on the assembly and use of a neonatal circumcision model for the training of resident physicians. The film is meant to improve resident physicians’ confidence in their ability to counsel patients and perform the procedure, while providing a resource about the procedure and its potential complications including treatment. Neonatal circumcision is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the USA. Despite the frequency with which it is performed, it remains a procedure with little or no formal training creating an unsafe environment for patients and resident physicians. Previous research has shown a lack of confidence among residents prior to performing the procedure, with improvement following practice on neonatal models. There is no instructional media on how to build or use a neonatal circumcision model. The model we designed is cost-effective and realistic. It is made from items that can be found throughout a typical hospital or household setting, and can be reused for multiple training sessions. The video provides an educational refresher for providers as well as guidance for learners about the procedure. The side-by-side videography between the training model and a neonatal circumcision enables learners to compare each phase of the procedure and appreciate the authenticity of the model.
The video has been submitted for consideration as an abstract to APGO/CREOG Film Festival.
