Abstract

Background: Short stature may confound results of areal BMD (aBMD) in Turner's Sydrome (TS). Use of Bone Mineral Apparent Density (BMAD) and Height-for –age Z-score (HAZ) adjusted aBMD are recommended for children with short stature. Conflicting results are obtained regarding BMAD of lumbar spine in TS from previous studies.

Aims and Objectives: To assess BMAD and HAZ-adjusted lumbar spine aBMD Z scores in Indian girls with TS.

Methodology: BMD using GE LUNAR DXA machine was performed in 33 TS (age 13-21 yrs) & 11 age matched healthy females (Operator CV-1.2%) BMAD and HAZ-adjusted BMD Z scores were calculated from previously published methods from BMDCS study.

Results: Although unadjusted BMD at lumbar spine suggested a significant reduction in TS (p=0.0148) compared to controls, there was no significant difference in BMAD (p=0.2051) or HAZ-adjusted aBMD (p=0.4826).

Conclusion: Lumbar spine BMAD and HAZ-adjusted aBMDs are not significantly lower in Paediatric Indian TS population. Further studies involving more patients are necessary.
