PMCID: PMC9129610

Abstract

Caregivers of patients with schizophrenia play an important role in the management of schizophrenia in India. They face several challenges and make many sacrifices in their day to day living while providing care for their patient (son/daughter/spouse/parent etc.). The impact on the caregivers has been studied as caregiver burden, caregiving experience, positive aspects of caregiving, stigma, quality of life, coping, expressed emotions, psychological morbidity, and caregiving burnout etc. Caregivers also play an important role in ensuring medication adherence. Due to all these different studies have reported the importance of family intervention in the management of schizophrenia. Almost all the treatment guidelines of schizophrenia give due importance to addressing the issues of caregivers to improve the outcome of schizophrenia. This symposium will focus on the Indian data on the caregiver research from India.
