The Pituitary, Fifth Edition is a comprehensive text covering basic and clinical pituitary knowledge, written by expert pituitary scholars. It provides a detailed description of the fundamental science underlying pituitary dysfunction and the wide spectrum of clinical disorders.
The new fifth edition has been extensively revised, structured in four sections to reflect the most recent data on new research advances in the field. This reference book describes the mechanisms for disease pathogenesis, including both subcellular and extrinsic mechanisms that subserve normal and disordered pituitary hormone secretion and action.
The first is dedicated to pituitary development and function, including each of cell lineages and corresponding hormones. The second section includes hypothalamo-pituitary disorders, hypopituitarism, immune mechanisms (a new chapter entitled Pituitary-Immune Interface) and pituitary involvement in systemic disorders, as well as effect of drugs and pituitary changes in pregnancy. The third section is dedicated to pituitary adenomas, tumorigenesis, genetics, diagnosis and treatment as well as new therapeutic approaches particularly in acromegaly and Cushing disease. In this section was included a chapter on aggressive pituitary adenomas developed to align with the WHOs classification of pituitary tumors.
The last section is dedicated to imaging, surgery and radiotherapy of pituitary adenomas.
Furthermore, new authors have been invited, ensuring a fresh perspective on critical issues in the field. This extensive body of knowledge is useful for students, trainees, physicians, and scientists who need to understand critical pituitary functions and impact of pituitary diseases across biomedical disciplines, as well as those working with endocrinologists such as neurosurgeons and OB/GYNs who care patients with pituitary disorders.
The Editor, Shlomo Melmed, MB, ChB, FRCP, MACP, is Executive VP and Dean of the Medical Faculty at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He leads Cedars-Sinai’s research and education programs, recruiting nationally recognized faculty leadership, establishing new educational programs and maintaining the highest academic standards.
