PMCID: PMC9553613

Objectives

This Clinical Perspectives will discuss some of the problems facing physicians as they try to improve their own wellness. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought increasing stressors to psychiatrists. Females are at higher risk of burnout than their male colleagues. Quality of sleep also plays a major role in maintaining a sense of physical and emotional well-being. Meditation and self-care tips will be introduced.

Methods

A review of the existing data was conducted. The audience engagement techniques used include polling and small group discussion. Participants will have a chance to try out some of the self-care tips during the presentation.

Results

Levels of burnout have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, as has the demand for child and adolescent psychiatric care. Females are disproportionately affected due to increasing childcare demands. Additionally, female physicians have a much higher rate of infertility compared to the general population. Having an adequate amount and quality of sleep is very helpful to promote personal wellness. Techniques that can help for improving personal wellness include meditation and exercise. Additionally, prioritizing self-care activities is important.

Conclusions

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in physician burnout levels. There is a higher demand for psychiatric care, and this can lead to working longer hours and higher stress among physicians. Women have been especially impacted due to increasing demands of family care created by the pandemic. Even prepandemic, females were at a higher risk for burnout symptoms. Despite the increase in burnout levels during the pandemic, there are techniques that can minimize burnout. Prioritizing sleep is important. Additionally, utilizing meditation and exercise can help increase wellness on a personal level.
