Abstract
This Commentary describes a call for contributions to an upcoming Special Issue (SI) of Biophysical Reviews on the Latin American Federation of Biophysical Societies (LAFeBS). It details the reason for the SI, the SI Editors contact information and the relevant submission details for those wishing to contribute.
The Latin American Federation of Biophysical Societies (LAFeBS), a member of IUPAB, includes a wide variety of science entities like biophysical societies, research groups and laboratories. Some of the major Federation members include the Biophysical Society of Argentina (SAB 2022), Brazilian Biophysical Society (SBBf 2022), Biophysics Branch of the Uruguayan Society of Biosciences (SBFuy 2022), Portuguese Biophysics Society (SPBf 2022), Spanish Biophysics Society (SBE 2022), Venezuelan Society of Physiological Sciences, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Section of the Cuban Society of Chemistry (SCQ) and Biophysics Groups from Chile, Colombia and Mexico.
Drawing upon the strengths existing within LAFeBS, we have proposed this SI to highlight four major aspects of current Latin American biophysical research.
-
(i)
Focus on capacity building by promoting quantitative training amongst biologists and physicists.
-
(ii)
Focus on plant biophysics, natural products research and biophysical modelling.
-
(iii)
Focus on molecular biophysics, quantum approaches and nanotechnologies.
-
(iv)
Focus on cell biophysics, physiology and bioimaging.
Structured around these four general areas, this future LAFeBS SI will be actively canvassing submissions covering topics on biophysical approaches to study the structure, properties, dynamics or function of biomolecules at atomic, molecular and macroscopic levels. These approaches cover a wide range of techniques, including microscopy, spectroscopy, electrophysiology, single-molecule methods and molecular modelling.
Special Issue Editors: The Special Issue will be prepared and edited by the following authors who have a long and continuing association with the Biophysical Reviews journal (Grasselli and Alonso 2021; Peluffo 2021; Yoneda et al. 2020; Itri et al. 2014; González Flecha 2017; Borges et al. 2016):
R. Daniel Peluffo: dpeluffo@unorte.edu.uy
Silvia del V. Alonso: salonso@unq.edu.ar
Rosangela Itri: itri@if.usp.br
F. Luis González Flecha: lgf@qb.ffyb.uba.ar
Leandro R.S. Barbosa: lbarbosa@if.usp.br
Submission Deadline: A Review article is requested to be submitted on (or prior to) March 25, 2023, with online publication scheduled for Issue 5 of that same year. When submitting your article, please choose the correct Special Issue assignment so that your article is not inadvertently included in the regular article section. Please also suggest three Reviewers capable of reviewing your manuscript.
About Biophysical Reviews: “Biophysical Reviews” was launched in 2009 and is the official journal of the “International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics”. Biophysical Reviews publishes both short and long review formats from key figures in the field. The majority of contributions are invited although interested authors are encouraged to discuss with the Editor the possibility of contributing a review. Biophysical Reviews covers the entire field of biophysics, generally defined as the science of describing and defining biological phenomenon using the concepts and the techniques of physics. This includes but is not limited by such areas as bioinformatics, biophysical methods and instrumentation, medical biophysics, biosystems, cell biophysics and cellular organization, macromolecule dynamics, structure and interactions, single molecule biophysics and membrane biophysics, channels and transporters.
