Abstract

We announce a call for contributions to a Special Issue of Biophysical Reviews associated with the VII Congress of Russian Biophysicists (to be held in Krasnodar, Russia, 17–23 April 2023). The Congress is the main biophysical meeting held within Russia and is organized every four years. The Congress will focus on both the physical principles and mechanisms of biological processes occurring at different levels of structural organization, from molecular to cellular to organism and to population levels. The Special Issue will accept reviews on topics from molecular biophysics, structure and dynamics of biopolymers, biophysics of the cell, energy transformation mechanisms, biophotonics, ecological biophysics, and medical biophysics, following the sections of the Congress. The VII Congress of Russian Biophysicists is supported by International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB). Here we describe main topics and sections of the coming event, the paper types for the journal issue, and the key deadline dates.

VII Congress of Russian Biophysicists

The VII Congress (Congress VII 2023) will be held in April 2023 in Krasnodar city, Russia, gathering a wide science audience of professionals and students. The Congress series has a long history dating back to the first International Congress on Biophysics organized at Moscow State University in far 1972. Since that first event, the congress format has continually changed in accordance with the major research themes conducted by Russian biophysicists with the meeting attracting a diverse range of physicists, chemists, mathematicians, life science scientists, and professionals in medicine and biotechnology. The main organizer of the Congress is National Committee of Russian Biophysicists with the support of the Russian Academy of Sciences and leading universities of Russia. Due to its association with the Russian Biophysicists Society, the preferred name of the meeting is the Congress of Russian Biophysicists rather than just Biophysics Congress. After a relatively long gap, the II Congress was organized in 1999 in Moscow. The III Congress was held in Voronezh in 2004 starting a series of meetings in different Russian regions. Nizhny Novgorod hosted the Congress in 2012, and then Rostov-on-Don in 2015. The previous VI Congress of Russian Biophysicists was held in Sochi at new Sirius University (Congress VI 2019) establishing a new regular periodicity of the event every four years.

The topics of the reports of the VII Congress of Russian Biophysicists will cover a wide range of fundamental problems in life sciences with a focus on both physical principles and mechanisms of biological processes occurring at different levels of structural organization, from molecular to cellular to organism and to population levels. The Special Issue will accept reviews on topics aligned with the following themes which follow the sections of the Congress.

  • (i)

    Molecular biophysics

  • (ii)

    Structure and dynamics of biopolymers

  • (iii)

    Biophysics of the cell

  • (iv)

    Energy transformation mechanisms

  • (v)

    Biophotonics

  • (vi)

    Ecological biophysics

  • (vii)

    Medical biophysics

  • (viii)

Special issue (SI) open call for articles and key dates

The Special Issue (SI) will be prepared by six senior members of the Russian Biophysicists’ Society. For those interested in contributing, further inquiries about the conference and SI can be made by contacting the SI Editors directly via email.

The SI of Biophysical Reviews will be prepared by both actively commissioning and openly soliciting review articles that cover the background of topics aligned with the major thematic sections of the Congress. Articles for the Special Issue (reviews, letters, or commentaries) must be submitted prior to June 15th of 2023 in order to be considered for the Special Issue (with online publication of the Special Issue scheduled for October 30th, 2023). When submitting your article, please choose the correct Special Issue assignment.

Also, we invite section leaders to write commentaries about the program of sections, and heads of departments to write commentaries about current research in the field of biophysics (in English). All interested scientists are welcome to both participate in the VII Congress of Russian Biophysicists and to submit the Special Issue!

Types of article considered for the special issue

Biophysical Reviews does not publish research articles, only reviews, and has 5 submission formats:

  • Short review (3000–4000 words, 3 figures)

  • Long review (10,000 words, 10 figures)

  • Letter (300–600 words on a scientific topic or scientific event of note)

  • Commentary (200–400 words on an event, happening, or opinion)

  • Editorial (usually written by a member of the Editorial Board)

Cost of publishing with Biophysical Reviews

Biophysical Reviews is a hybrid open access journal. Once an article is accepted for publication, authors will have the option to choose between the zero-cost traditional publishing model (where published articles are available to institutions and individuals who subscribe to Biophysical Reviews) and an open access model (where authors pay a fee of £2180.00/$3280.00/€2590.00).
