Abstract
Introduction
Radiographers provide mobile radiography services for patients who are critically ill as well as patients isolated due to highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The pandemic has caused the demand for mobile radiography to increase. This study aims to understand the experience of radiographers performing mobile radiography during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods
This study was conducted through an online survey disseminated to radiographers working in Singapore public hospitals who have performed mobile radiography from February 2020 to September 2021. The key sections explored in the survey are the views of participants about the processes and adequacy of resources related to mobile radiography as well as their experiences and feelings. The answers were obtained in the form of multiple choice questions and Likert scales.
Results
96% of radiographers reported a rise in mobile radiography workload and 64% of radiographers experienced an increase in X-ray orders for other body regions besides chest and abdominal X-rays. 85% of the radiographers felt that they needed more time to perform an examination for COVID-19 patients, which they found was more challenging. Radiographers agreed that providing adequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) and being kept up to date on latest guidelines gave them more assurance.
Conclusion
The need to preserve isolation and avoid cross infection during the pandemic has increased demand for mobile radiography, resulting in additional stress and anxiety among radiographers. Understanding the climate and perception of radiographers performing mobile radiography can assist the development of policies, processes and resources so that radiographers feel supported and can perform their duties safely and effectively
