Owing to the unprecedented disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the judging and announcement of the 2019 Best Research Paper Awards was delayed and judging for research papers published in 2020 and 2021 was not conducted. The SMJ Best Research Paper Award will resume for research papers published in the year 2022.

The following four criteria were adopted by the judging panel in determining the winning articles:

  1. Potential impact on clinical practice;

  2. Rigorous study design/research methodologies;

  3. Comprehensive data analysis and balanced discussion; and

  4. Quality of data interpretation.

My deepest appreciation goes to our panel of judges for their diligent and conscientious efforts: Dr Chia Pow-Li, Prof Wilfred CG Peh, Dr Pwee Keng Ho, Dr NV Ramani, A/Prof Sim Kang, Prof Tan Huay Cheem, Prof Teo Eng Kiong, Dr Wang Yu Tien and Prof Wong Wai Keong.

The award winners received a commemorative trophy and certificates, which were presented during the Singapore Medical Association Annual Dinner held at Sheraton Towers Singapore on 6 November 2022.
