Extended Data Fig. 9 — Our ancient Betula sample was placed basal to a main Betula clade, based on 29 supporting (green) and 13 conflicting (red) SNPs on its placement branch, and with very low numbers of supporting SNPs elsewhere in the tree other than those leading to this branch. This placement agrees with the BEAST molecular dating analysis (see Molecular Dating Methods).
