Sustainability in swine production can be loosely categorized into four areas – environmental, economic, societal, and health and well-being (Vonderohe et al. 2022). The swine industry has made progress in all of these areas: reducing environmental impacts through improved animal management and engineering strategies, maintaining economic sustainability through increased production with similar or reduced costs, altering husbandry practices to address societal concerns, and improving biosecurity and responses to health challenges (Radcliffe and Sartin, 2022). Swine sustainability is a piece of the puzzle of animal agriculture, which itself is a piece of the larger puzzle of global sustainability.
