During a COVID-19 infection, liver dysfunction is defined by the detrimental consequences of cytokine storms (severe inflammation, thrombosis, hypoxia, and so on). Cholangitis and cytopathic effects are events that occur during COVID-19 infection as part of acute liver injury. However, acute cholangiocyte injury may be a contributing cause of post-COVID-19 cholestatic liver dysfunction, a topic beyond the scope of the current review.
