Missouri Medicine Announces New Editorial Board Members

Missouri Medicine announces new Editorial Board members. Board members are selected on the basis of exceptional professional accomplishment and expertise in their specialty.

Erik M. Grossmann, MD, is the new Editorial Board member for Colon and Rectal Surgery. Dr. Grossman is Associate Professor of Surgery, Department of General Surgery, and Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. He has more than two decades of experience as a surgeon who focuses on patients with intestinal problems.

Dr. Grossman replaces Jose M. Dominguez, MD, who is retiring after nearly a decade in this position. Dr. Dominguez has written numerous articles on colon and rectal surgery for Missouri Medicine, and we wish him the best in his future.

Sherry X. Zhou, MD, PhD, is the new Editorial Board member for Endocrinology. Dr. Zhou is an endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism specialist and practices at Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and completed her Internship at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Zhou replaces Howard M. Rosen, MD, who represented Endocrinology on the board for nearly 15 years and is retiring. Missouri Medicine thanks Dr. Rosen for his service.

Jeffrey F. Scherer, MA, PhD, an MSMA Affiliate member, is the new Editorial Board member for Statistics and Methodology. He is in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and also with the St. Louis Center for Health Outcomes Research.

He replaces Christopher R. Carpenter, MD, MSc, who has represented Statistics and Methodology for five years, and is leaving Missouri for a position at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as Vice Chair of Implementation and Innovation. We wish him the best in his new position.

Douglas M. Burgess, MD, is the new Editorial Board member for Toxicology and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Burgess is a Psychiatrist with University of Missouri-Kansas City in the Section of Addiction Psychiatry. He works at University Health-Behavioral Health, and is a researcher at the Center for Behavioral Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. He replaces Evan S. Schwarz, MD, who coordinated several theme series on addiction medicine and emergency medicine, and we thank him for his service.

Scott W. Kujath, MD, FACS, FSVS, is the new Editorial Board member for Vascular Surgery. He practices at Midwest Aortic & Vascular Institute in North Kansas City. He replaces Jonathan M. T. Bath, MD, and we thank Dr. Bath for his service.

The Missouri Academy of Family Physicians presented several awards at its recent Annual Meeting. Recipients of the 2022 Distinguished Service Award included MSMA members Patrick Harr, MD, a retired Family Physician from Maryville; Peter Koopman, MD, a Clinical Family and Community Medicine professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia; and Keith Ratcliff, MD, a Family Physician at Mercy Clinic Four Rivers Family Medicine in New Haven. The award honors those who have demonstrated long-time dedication to the MAFP and the specialty of Family Medicine.

Also at the Annual Meeting, MSMA member Charlie Rasmussen, DO, was named the MAFP 2022 Family Physician of the Year. Dr. Rasmussen is in solo practice at Table Rock Family Medicine and Obstetrics in Branson.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society installed several MSMA members to leadership positions at its February 11 Annual Meeting and Installation Dinner. M. Laurin Council, MD, the 2023 President, is a professor of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine who was installed by George Hubbell, MD with guest MSMA EVP Jeff Howell. Also taking office were, above from left to right: Kirsten Dunn, MD, President Elect; Richard Wieder, MD, Vice President: and Robert Brennan, Jr., MD, Secretary/Treasurer. Erin Gardner, MD, accedes to Immediate Past President. MSMA members Dee Anna Glaser, MD, and George Mansour, MD, were elected to three-year terms as Councilors.
