Before we dive deeper into the relatively uncharted and untested waters of data protection/data security and the global laws and policies for safeguarding the same, it is important to understand the difference between data privacy and data protection because for a vast majority there is no difference between the two. While data privacy refers to having or who has authorized access to the data; data protection on the other hand pertains to the tools, approaches, strategies and policies against unauthorized access to the data. Thus it is highly technical as any negligence or carelessness in access control of personal data can put any organization and its members vulnerable to malpractices such as swindling and embezzlement and at a high risk for identity theft and fraud. At administrative level such data violation means serious data breaches putting the credibility of an entire organization in jeopardy. This may seriously impact reputations in national and international domains.

Data protection actually rely on a multitude of technologies such as Data Encryption, Identity and Access Management (IAM), Firewalls, Intrusion detection and prevention softwares and many more. Not only a vigorous and tough data protection strategy is vital to any organization it become absolutely crucial especially for those that collects, transmits or stores sensitive data such as personal health information (PHI) and personally identifiable information (PII). Flow of such critical information to unauthorized personnel may cause serious adverse effects to business operations and finances. Data protection regulatory agencies and the related laws, clauses and policies differ from country to country, state to state and between various organizations making it even more complex and challenging to ensure a proper and appropriate compliance.

Creating checks and balances practices such as harvesting nothing more than the needed information, limits the liability on the data protection systems. Also newer generations of Data Portability and Data Sovereignty have evolved by the use of advanced technological breakthroughs and are now considered to be extremely safe data protection strategies even when there are ransomware attacks. Moreover newer end point securities satisfactorily neutralizes the threats posed by Inimical forces to use end points to gain unauthorized access to cause extreme damage to the collected data and databases by way of theft or injecting malicious viruses.

Data protection therefore is a set of responsibilities in form of guidelines, rules and principles which ensure protection of personal and organizational data from external risks such as malwares, ransomwares, phishing scamsters, hackers, and data spies - helping to maintain strict online privacy which is the need of the hour especially in societies like us where it is sacrosanct to protect an individual’s rights and freedom and to ensure that they are not violated in any form.

ISPlendidly Yours
