The solid line is a fit of the equation i(t) = 1 – exp(–t/t_d) to the data. The best fit yields t_d = 39.2 min. A better fit (dashed line) is obtained with i(t) = i_max(1 – exp(–t/t_d)), where Nef is assumed to internalize not all but a maximum percentage i_max of the surface CD4 receptors. That Nef alone is insufficient to completely down-modulate surface CD4 receptors has been demonstrated (2). The best-fit parameters yield i_max = 34% and t_d = 5.7 min.
