(A) The Tax score to quantify Tax mRNA expression was calculated as in Figure 4 and compared in subjects with HAM/TSP (n=6) and HTLV-1 carriers (n=12), with HAM/TSP subjects showing higher Tax scores from PBMCs after 7 days’ in vitro culture. (B) Proliferation of CD8+ T cells at day 7 (%CFSElow) was compared to Tax expression at day 7 in HTLV-1 infected subjects (n=13) and analyzed by linear regression. (C) Proviral load was measured in ex vivo PBMCs in subjects with HAM/TSP (n=6) and HTLV-1 carriers (n=15). (D) Proliferation of C + T cells at day 7 (%CFSElow) was compared to HTLV-1 proviral load ex vivo in HTLV-1 infected subjects (n=15) and analyzed by linear regression.
