A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of endovascular thrombectomy compared to best medical treatment for acute ischemic stroke by Joyce S Balami, Brad A Sutherland, Laurel D Edmunds, Iris Q Grunwald, Ain A Neuhaus, Gina Hadley, Hasneen Karbalai, Kneale A Metcalf, Gabriele C DeLuca, and Alastair M Buchan was published in Int J Stroke December 2015; 10: 1168–1178, doi: . The authors would like to highlight the following change to readers.
It has come to our attention that the data we have used to generate Figure 3(a) (mortality at 90 days post-ischemic stroke) in our meta-analysis (1) was incorrect. Specifically, we presented 90-day mortality data from the SYNTHESIS trial (2) that was actually seven-day mortality data. The seven-day data that we mistakenly included was for endovascular therapy 14/181 (8%) vs. intravenous therapy 11/181 (6%) (presented in Table 2). Figure 3(a) showed the odds ratio for mortality in this trial to be 1.30 (95% confidence interval 0.57, 2.94). The overall odds ratio for endovascular therapy mortality across the eight included studies was 0.84 (0.67, 1.05; p = 0.12). After reviewing the original SYNTHESIS paper, the actual 90-day mortality data from SYNTHESIS are 26/181 (14%) for endovascular therapy and 18/181 (10%) for intravenous therapy (which should now be included in Table 2). Revised Figure 3(a) shows that the odds ratio for the corrected 90-day mortality data from SYNTHESIS is 1.52 (0.80, 2.88). The corrected overall odds ratio for endovascular therapy mortality across the eight included studies is now 0.87 (0.70, 1.08; p = 0.21; Revised Figure 3(a)). These corrected results do not affect the interpretation of the meta-analysis.
