1. Overview
The Journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians Open (JACEP Open) is beginning its sixth year of publication. Beginning in January 2025, Elsevier has assumed duties as the publisher of JACEP Open. This change will enable new synergies between JACEP Open and Annals of Emergency Medicine.
2. Status of the Journal
JACEP Open began accepting and publishing manuscripts in the latter half of 2019. Important milestones include listing in PubMed Central, indexing in PubMed, acceptance to Clarivate Web of Science for coverage in the Emerging Sources Citation Index, indexing with Directory of Open Access Journals, PubMed, Europe PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase (Elsevier, Inc), SCOPUS, and SHERPA/RoMEO. The journal’s impact factor for 2024 was 1.7. In 2023, the journal launched a special collection in Critical Care, and in 2024, the journal added special collections in Informatics and Observation Medicine.
3. Editorial and Production Performance
The journal received almost 750 manuscripts in 2024 (Table 1), a 20% increase over 2023. Original research, brief reports, reviews, and clinical concepts pieces comprised approximately 45% of all submissions. Case reports and Images and Videos in Emergency Medicine comprised the remaining 55% of submissions. Approximately 33% of submissions were from international authors from 49 countries outside the United States, and 428 (57%) manuscripts were transferred from JACEP Open’s companion journal, Annals of Emergency Medicine.

JACEP Open appeared in more than 360 articles in media outlets, such as Associated Press, Becker's Hospital Review, Benzinga, Canadian Insidendr, EurekAlert, Morning Star, MSN, Physician's Weekly, ReachMD, Times Telegram, Yahoo! News, and others. The journal’s top news headline mention for 2024 was on Good Morning America/ABC News on February 16, 2024, for “Amid rising measles cases, a new generation of doctors is being taught how to spot the disease.”
6. Editorial Board
The JACEP Open editorial board plays a pivotal role in the success of the journal. The current editorial board includes 50 editors, of whom 16 are women and 3 are international editors. In 2024, we recruited 8 new editors, including 3 editors for the Observation Medicine collection. We also recruited a new assistant editor for the Toxicology section and 2 assistant editors for Critical Care. Four individuals serve as methodology-statistical editors, and a new methodology-statistical editor will be added to the editorial board, assuring expert assessment of all original research manuscripts with more advanced statistical and analytic methods.
7. Peer Reviewers
Currently, there are over 361 individuals in JACEP Open’s pool of primary reviewers. In 2024, JACEP Open peer reviewers completed 673 assignments. JACEP Open recognized the top 25 peer reviewers for 2022-2023 (Table 9) and will do so again in 2023-2024. JACEP Open offers continuing medical education credits to all peer reviewers, which will now be offered by ACEP and sent at the end of the calendar year.

8. Educational Activities and Initiatives
Members of JACEP Open editorial board partnered with members of the Annals of Emergency Medicine editorial board to provide an author’s workshop titled “Editors’ Pearls” at the 2024 ACEP Scientific Assembly. The workshop provided guidance and pearls for successful publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
9. Special Collections
In 2023, the journal launched a new special collection in Critical Care spearheaded by JACEP Open editors Nicholas Johnson, MD, and Robert Levine, MD, and built on JACEP Open’s existing body of published Critical Care papers. Fourteen articles have already been published in the Critical Care Special Collection. Other special collections include Informatics, led by Adam Landman, MD, MS, R. Andrew Taylor, MD, MHS, and Nathan Hoot, MD, PhD, and Observation Medicine, led by Christopher Baugh, MD, Matthew Wheatley, MD, and Joseph Lykins, MD.
JACEP Open published scientific abstracts from the 2024 Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians (PACEP) Scientific Assembly.1 The publication of additional abstracts from national and international conferences is planned for 2025.
