Tolerance to a defined chemical hapten produced in adult guinea-pigs after thymectomy

Abstract

Specific immunologic tolerance to the picryl hapten was induced in thymectomized adult guinea-pigs by a single intravenous injection of picrylated erythrocyte stromata, demonstrating that the lymphoid system may be rendered tolerant independently of the thymus. This dual unresponsiveness, involving circulating antibody as well as contact delayed reactivity to the hapten, cannot be differentiated from tolerance similarly induced in normal animals.
