Diseases of the Oral Mucosa

G Bradley
PMCID: PMC2219102  PMID: 21253207

Abstract

This article provides a clinical approach to the more common oral mucosal lesions. Histologic diagnoses are not included, apart from their use in diagnosis and management. In a small number of oral mucosal lesions, clinical appearance is sufficiently distinctive to permit accurate diagnosis, but a biopsy is usually necessary. Clinical appearance is important in directing further investigations such as culture and serologic testing.

Keywords: oral mucosa, mucocutaneous diseases, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
